Briony fears being found out as a witch. She believes she killed her stepmother and is responsible for her twin sister's mental handicap. But when handsome Eldric returns to Swampsea, her troubles really start as she begins to untangle the past and her feelings of guilt. Though the plot is slow to start, Billingsly's evocative language and Duerden's adept narration is enough to draw the listeners into the tale. Audio. Colleen Beaupre.
Part mystery, part non-scary ghost story, part quest to belong, all fun and wonderfully imaginative. Liesl and her new friends, Po, Bundle, and Will, set off on an adventure to give her late father the closure he needs to move on in the Other Side. The many characters are delightfully intertwined. The careful reader may pick up on the clues about the relationships between the characters and all is revealed in the last few paragraphs. Even non-characters affect each other such as magic and the weather. A tidy and satisfying ending completes the package. Ten to Fourteen. Julie Dietzel-Glair
In boggy Swampsea, a place still closely tied to old magic, Briony is convinced she is a witch and that her magic has harmed people she loves. When leonine Eldric arrives, they become close and Eldric’s presence brings new dangers. It takes some staying power to get into this book, mostly because the narrative style reflects Briony’s own confusion and distress, but the journey is well worth the effort! The strong characterizations, narrative voice, and lush, sensual writing create a story that is distinct and engrossing. Fourteen and up. Martha Baden
The rollicking adventures of Tiffany Aching and her unpredictable “Wee Free Men” conclude as she takes on the malevolent dark force she may have mistakenly awakened and tries to regain the trust of the people of Chalk Hills.
An original musical score and sound effects enhance Jonathan Davis’s grave, confiding voice in this account of a young boy who moves to a small coastal village and realizes that something is wrong with his new home. When he and his sister befriend a local boy, the boy reveals their eerie connection to a nearby shipwreck and a sinister secret that threatens their lives.
Fearful and superstitious townsfolk drive orphaned Kate from her home. Alone except for Taggle, her cat, she joins the Roamers in a desperate quest to reclaim her shadow, having traded it to the dangerous witch, Linay, in exchange for the unspoken desire of her heart.
A single transformative kiss is the leitmotif that connects three very different stories. Rooted in myth and fairy tale appear an irresistibly transformed goblin, a curse of silence, and a Druj queen’s human pets. Tantalizing illustrations act as “trailers,” previewing each story.
After an impostor king seizes Lumatere, an impassable wall surrounding the kingdom keeps exiled survivors outside. Ten years later, the mysterious Evanjalin cajoles Finnikin to return. This epic fantasy unfolds in a detailed world full of unpredictable and unsettling discoveries.
