Vera Dietz and Charlie Kahn have been best friends since childhood. However, by the start of their senior year they've grown apart. When Charlie dies a mysterious death Vera is plagued by guilt. The narrative, maily from Vera's point of view is intercepted with asides which works really well in audio. Unforgettable characters, superbly written and a great narrator makes for a memorable audio experience. Ages 14+ Maria E. Gentle

Unfortunately for Vera, she knows what happened the night her best friend Charlie died, and, now, he’s demanding exoneration. Houck’s flat, matter-of-fact voice perfectly captures both Vera’s emotions and her edgy personality. The nonlinear narrative shifts occur seamlessly, and the alternating voices of Vera, her dad, the town pagoda, and “Charlie, the dead kid,” dovetail as the story unfolds. Ages 14+

Positive Comments:

  • The non-enthusiastic tone in the main narrator’s voice captures Vera’s character well.
  • Because the audio is so engaging, teens will probably want to listen to it.

Concerns:

  • The word “mischievous” is mispronounced.
  • Neither the father’s character nor the cyclical aspect of his rules for doing things are as obvious in the listening as they are in print.
