Author Information

Birdsall

2013 Nomination (not yet selected):

With Rosalind away on a holiday in New Jersey, Skye is the oldest available Penderwick, responsible for her sisters Jane and Batty while on an eventful vacation in Maine with Aunt Claire and their good friend and neighbor Jeffrey. You do not have to have read the first two to come to know and care about these well-drawn characters. Birdsall smoothly shifts points of view without confusing the reader. A perfect summer reading adventure with a moving sub-plot very satisfactorily resolved. Seven to Ten.

Positive Comments:
  •  Revisiting this family is fun.
  •  The wonderful, enjoyable setting and the humorous interplay among family members is very engaging.
  •  Some readers love that Batty discovers music and that the family eventually accepts this new talent.
  •  The side-story of the crush is very realistic for that age.

Observation:
  •  Having this volume stand alone and not disappoint makes readers of the other two books happy.

Concerns:
  •  The children hardly ever go to the beach.
  •  The aunt’s injury seems too convenient to make her almost invisible.
  •  The coincidence at the end was ridiculous, but it is so well handled that readers believe it.
  •  No real emphasis on the hard work of learning to play an instrument appears.
