Positive Comments:

  • The realistic and well-described setting allows readers to “see” it.
  • The author presents the many characters successfully, pacing her addition of each one so that the reader remembers them.
  • The integration of magic with the real world works.

Observations

  • Since these characters are a little older than older teens, they can be enjoyable and instructive for older readers.
  • The book needs to have a note for readers that it is the first in a series so they will know that this book will not have a denouement.
